On October 7, EU ambassadors approved nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting russia's military-industrial complex. Ministers are due to adopt them formally on October 12.

On October 7, ambassadors of the European Union member states, meeting in the COREPER II format, unanimously approved the largest sanctions list against russia since the start of the full-scale war. A source in diplomatic circles told Ukrinform about it. Volunteers Support Ukraine follows international support for Ukraine closely, because both people's safety and the ability to help those affected depend on it.

What the list contains

It covers 1,569 listings proposed last month by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas: 743 individuals and 826 entities. Another 77 entities linked to the elections to russia's State Duma are added, including candidates who ran in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories and several election commission officials. In total, that is about 1,600 listings.

Who is targeted

According to the Kyiv Independent, the sanctions target russia's defence industry: shipyards, aviation and aerospace companies, electronics makers and armoured-vehicle repair facilities. The total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU over the war is approaching 3,000.

What comes next

The list is to be formally approved by the EU Foreign Affairs Council at its meeting on October 12 in Luxembourg. The European Union also plans to move away from large standalone packages towards smaller sanctions lists adopted on a rolling basis.

Why it matters

Sanctions limit russia's ability to produce weapons and finance the war. NGO Volunteers Support Ukraine keeps helping people affected by the war in whatever way the available resources allow.
