Ukraine has taken another step towards EU membership: on October 7, Hungary gave the "green light" at the level of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) to the negotiating positions on two new clusters. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced it. Volunteers Support Ukraine sees news like this as a good sign: European support strengthens the country and the people who live in it.

Which clusters are opening

These are Cluster 2, "Internal Market", and Cluster 3, "Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth". According to Sybiha, the Hungarian side agreed the negotiating positions on them at the COREPER level. The minister thanked Anita Orbán for the teamwork, which he said serves the interests of both friendly nations and a strong Europe. "Ukraine's EU accession is moving forward step by step," he wrote.

A step towards Hungary

Sybiha recalled that a bill regulating the educational rights of Ukraine's indigenous peoples and national minorities was registered in the Verkhovna Rada these days, and the relevant committee has already backed it. According to Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, parliament plans to resume work on October 12 and consider a number of important bills, including those tied to European integration and unblocking the clusters.

What comes next

European Commissioner Marta Kos had earlier voiced hope that two more negotiating clusters could be opened for Ukraine and Moldova next week. The European Commission also plans to present Ukraine's accession roadmap on October 28. NGO Volunteers Support Ukraine keeps helping people affected by the war in whatever way the available resources allow.
