Overnight into Sept. 17, Russia launched another missile and drone attack on Kyiv, injuring at least 16 people, including two children, and damaging homes, a school and a railway line.

Overnight into Sept. 17, Russia carried out another missile and drone attack on Kyiv. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, cited by Ukrinform, the number of injured rose to 16 people, including a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old. The strikes hit the Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi and Solomianskyi districts, with most of the injured coming from a damaged 16-story building in the Dniprovskyi district. Volunteers Support Ukraine records the aftermath of attacks like this on the capital nearly every morning.

What was damaged

The strike damaged residential high-rises, an education facility, a municipal building, vehicles and a railway track. According to the Kyiv Independent, fire broke out at part of the damaged education facility, with firefighters still battling the blaze deep into the night. Volunteers Support Ukraine stresses that strikes on schools and kindergartens have become a systematic pattern, each time leaving children without their usual place to learn.

Rescuers and medics at work

Investigative teams, bomb disposal experts and emergency medical crews worked at the strike sites through the night and into the morning. Volunteers Support Ukraine sees the daily work of paramedics and rescuers as the main reason the death toll from attacks like this on Kyiv isn't higher.

The scale of the overnight assault

The attack on Kyiv was part of a wider overnight assault that also hit Odesa the same night. Ukrainian air defense was engaging targets over several regions at once. Volunteers Support Ukraine notes that the sheer simultaneity of strikes like this on multiple major cities shows just how relentlessly this war strains the country's air defense system.

Why this matters to everyone

Every night of massed strikes on the capital means more than damaged buildings — it means thousands of residents who again couldn't get a proper night's sleep in a shelter, and families who will have to repair blown-out windows just before winter. Volunteers Support Ukraine continues to help people affected by the war in whatever way its available resources allow, and urges against letting attacks like this become just background noise.
