On 30 September Russia launched its heaviest attack on Kyiv's power grid since last autumn: four dead, at least eight injured, and air-raid alerts in the capital lasting more than 20 hours.

On 30 September Russia carried out a day-long attack on the power grid in and around Kyiv — by media accounts the first of this scale since last autumn. Four people were killed, at least eight were injured, and air-raid alerts in the capital lasted more than 20 hours. Volunteers Support Ukraine summarizes the main points from local officials, energy companies and international agencies.

Casualties and damage

According to the Kyiv Independent and Al Jazeera, three people were killed in Kyiv and a child in the surrounding region; at least eight were injured. More than a dozen homes were damaged in the Sviatoshynskyi district, a communications facility in the capital was hit, and houses, warehouses and vehicles were damaged in the Kyiv region. Critical infrastructure was also struck in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions, as well as the port of Izmail.

A blow to light and heat

Russian forces targeted energy facilities, damaging the grid and disrupting electricity in and around Kyiv. Ukrenergo imposed emergency outages in Kyiv city and the Kyiv, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions, while DTEK said it restored power to about 8,000 households. Equipment at the Trypilska thermal power plant was damaged, and trams were suspended in two districts of the capital.

A new weapon

Presidential adviser Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov said that on 30 September Russia used, for the first time, a jet-powered drone with a KRSN warhead: a 40-kilogram main charge plus four additional modules, designed to destroy high-voltage pylons and steel bridge structures. In his view, the enemy probably plans to strike important power transmission lines.

The scale of the attack

The Kyiv Independent reports that between 06:30 and 18:30 air defenses downed 254 of 285 drones, some of them jet-powered. In the overnight attack of 29–30 September, the president said nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles were used.

What it means for people

As the cold sets in, every strike on energy infrastructure means darkness, chilly apartments and extra strain on families. NGO Volunteers Support Ukraine keeps helping people affected by the war in whatever way its available resources allow.
