Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv and the region killed at least 11 people, including victims in Boryspil, marking a second consecutive night of strikes on the Kyiv region.
Overnight into September 1, Russia carried out one of its most intense strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region in recent weeks: at least 11 people were killed and more than a dozen wounded, including three children. The attack marked a second consecutive night of strikes on the Kyiv region. According to Ukraine's Air Force, the barrage began around 6 p.m. on Monday and lasted through the night: Russia used ballistic, cruise and anti-radar missiles alongside 218 drones and decoys, roughly a third of them jet-powered. Ukrainian air defenses destroyed or suppressed 199 aerial targets. The military said the Kyiv and Odesa regions were the primary targets. Strikes hit Kyiv's Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts, as well as Boryspil and the Obukhiv district in the wider region. Emergency crews evacuated 48 people and rescued two from rubble. Volunteers Support Ukraine notes that the scale of this attack is one more confirmation that civilians remain the primary target of Russia's terror campaign.
The town of Boryspil, just outside Kyiv, suffered the heaviest losses. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, said the death toll from the strike on Boryspil had risen to four, with 13 more people injured. A five-story residential building, a retail store, private homes, vehicles and an industrial enterprise were damaged; in the neighboring Obukhiv district, private homes, storage facilities and a gas station were hit. Among the injured were two children, born in 2021 and 2010. Volunteers Support Ukraine believes every such strike on residential neighborhoods is a war crime that must be documented and never forgotten.
Alongside rescuers and police, State Emergency Service psychologists were on site, supporting residents of damaged buildings right there on the street, amid the rubble. Local residents spent the night listening to explosions and watching flashes light up the sky, while the Air Force warned of the threat of ballistic missiles and urged people to remain in shelters. Volunteers Support Ukraine believes this kind of on-the-spot psychological support is just as vital a part of saving people as physically pulling them from the rubble.
