According to Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office, the strike was carried out with two small "Banderol" cruise missiles aimed at civilian infrastructure in Pechenihy, a village roughly 40 kilometres from the Russian border and about 30 miles southeast of Kharkiv city. The missiles hit the very centre of the settlement, where a post office, a cafe, a shop and residential homes stand close together. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the target as "a busy intersection... with a post office and stores, surrounded only by residential buildings." Volunteers Support Ukraine stresses that this was a purely civilian site with no military presence.
Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported the first casualty figures early in the day, and the toll remained preliminary as it rose through the day. According to the latest reporting, at least 10 people were killed and 17 injured. The strike damaged roughly 10 private homes, a cafe, a post office, a shop and at least seven vehicles, some of which burned out completely on the road. Emergency services worked throughout the day clearing rubble, putting out fires and carrying the injured from destroyed buildings. Volunteers Support Ukraine notes with sorrow how an ordinary intersection turned into a scene of tragedy within moments.
President Zelensky called the strike "a brutal attack" and said: "We will definitely respond to this Russian strike." He also urged international partners to increase pressure on Russia to stop such attacks on civilians. Kharkiv Regional Military Administration head Oleh Syniehubov coordinated the emergency response on the ground and kept the public updated on the rescue operation throughout the day.
