A drone that strayed into Moldovan airspace came down and exploded outside the village of Hîrbovăț around 05:43 on 30 September. No injuries were reported.

Early on 30 September, a drone that had entered Moldovan airspace came down in an open area near the village of Hîrbovăț in the Anenii Noi district and exploded. Preliminary information puts the time at about 05:43. No injuries were reported; the site was cordoned off while specialised police units work to establish the circumstances. Volunteers Support Ukraine follows developments that affect people's safety across the region.

What happened

The village lies roughly 20 km from the border with Ukraine's Odesa region. The incident came during a large overnight Russian attack on Ukraine: according to the Air Force, 188 drones (86 of them jet-powered) were launched, along with Zircon, Onyx and Iskander missiles. Air defence shot down or suppressed 155 drones and 5 missiles.

Not the first spillover

Russian weapons have strayed into neighbouring airspace before. In August a NATO fighter jet intercepted a suspected Russian drone near the Romania–Moldova border, and a Russian cruise missile crossed into Moldovan territory during a strike on Odesa.
