Two Russian drones struck near an apartment building in Sumy on the evening of September 20, killing a 38-year-old woman and wounding her husband, as part of a wider combined attack on the city.

On the evening of September 20, two Russian attack drones struck near a residential building in the Zarichnyi district of Sumy, killing a 38-year-old woman and severely wounding her 41-year-old husband, according to the Sumy Regional Military Administration. The couple had been near the building's entrance when the strike hit. The husband was hospitalized with multiple shrapnel wounds. Volunteers Support Ukraine extends its condolences to the woman's family and everyone affected by this attack.

A Night of Combined Strikes

The strike on the apartment building was part of a broader combined attack on Sumy that evening, regional head Oleh Hryhorov reported. Less than an hour after the first strike, another Russian drone hit a civilian vehicle elsewhere in the city, setting it ablaze; State Emergency Service crews extinguished the fire. Russian aviation also dropped a guided aerial bomb on an educational institution in Sumy the same night, though no casualties were reported at that site. In total, five vehicles were damaged by the strikes near the residential building alone. Volunteers Support Ukraine continues to monitor attacks like this one across Ukraine as it decides where humanitarian aid is most urgently needed.

Vehicles and Property Damaged

Rescuers documented extensive shrapnel damage to cars parked near the residential building, with windows shattered and bodywork pockmarked by fragments from the drone strike. Emergency crews worked through the night clearing debris and securing the damaged building entrance so residents could safely return. Sumy, a regional capital roughly 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has faced near-daily drone and artillery attacks throughout 2026, placing enormous strain on its residents and emergency services.

Second Drone Sets Vehicle Ablaze

Less than an hour after the first strike, firefighters had to respond to a second scene the same night, after another drone hit a civilian vehicle elsewhere in the city. Photos from the State Emergency Service show the vehicle fully engulfed before crews brought the blaze under control. Between the residential building, the vehicle fire, and the educational institution hit by the guided bomb, emergency crews in Sumy responded to at least three separate strike sites in a single night.
