Responding to Trump's call for a «new president», Zelensky said Ukraine will hold elections if russia agrees to a 60-day total ceasefire.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine will hold elections if Donald Trump and Vladimir putin really want them, on the condition of a total ceasefire lasting 60 days. He made the remarks in an ABC News interview on 11 October.

A reply to Trump's remarks

Trump had said it was time for Ukraine to get a «new president». Zelensky answered that he respects the American leader, but that it is up to Ukrainian society to choose its leader. He said he asked Trump's team to tell putin: «give us two months, 60 days off», a total ceasefire, after which Ukraine would organize elections. Why a ceasefire is needed

Ukrainian law forbids holding elections under martial law, which was declared after the full-scale invasion. That is why Zelensky ties a vote to a total ceasefire. The report notes that Trump has called for elections in Ukraine before, often shortly after meetings with russian delegations.

Fuel prices and cooperation with allies

Zelensky rejected Trump's claim that Ukraine is to blame for rising fuel prices. In his words, everybody in the world understands that prices are rising because of the war in the Middle East. The president also expressed hope that Europe, the United States and Ukraine will keep working together, adding that Ukraine relies on American support and will defend itself regardless.
