The president called Vivaldi a very successful operation: Ukrainian forces have regained 125 to 140 square kilometres, and the 3rd Army Corps has completed the offensive's third phase.

Ukrainian forces have regained between 125 and 140 square kilometres of territory in Operation Vivaldi, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on 3 October. In his words, Vivaldi is a very successful operation, and it is not over yet. Volunteers Support Ukraine summarises what is known.

What the president said

Zelensky said the military had wanted to launch the operation a year earlier but postponed it to prepare better, which, he said, produced a stronger result and lower Ukrainian casualties. On 30 September he visited the command post of the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade in the Lyman sector and thanked the troops for returning more than 125 km² of land.

The offensive's third phase

Separately, it was reported that the 3rd Army Corps completed the operation's third phase: Nove, Ridkodub and Katerynivka were liberated, and full control was restored over Karpivka and Novomykhailivka. According to the corps, a further 51 km² was regained in the third phase and 176 km² in total since the offensive began.

Why this is good news

Every village recovered means people who lived under occupation are back on Ukrainian-controlled land, and the front line moves away from neighbouring communities. The operation is ongoing, so the figures may change.

Volunteers Support Ukraine continues to help people affected by the war as far as its resources allow, and is glad of every report of native land returning home.
