After a call with putin, Trump announced russian diesel supplies to the US and the Treasury issued a temporary licence; Zelensky called it extra money for the war.
On 9 October, after a call with putin, US President Donald Trump announced that russia would supply millions of tons of diesel to the American and global markets. Volodymyr Zelensky sharply criticised the move, while Ukrainian, American and European delegations were talking in Miami. Volunteers Support Ukraine follows the diplomatic developments that bear on the war.

In a Truth Social post, Trump gave the volumes: over 300,000 tons immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1,000,000 tons after that. The US Treasury said OFAC is issuing a temporary general licence allowing russian diesel to be supplied to the global market; according to Kyiv Post it runs until 7 April 2027. The Kremlin said russia confirmed during the call its willingness to supply oil and petroleum products. A European diplomat quoted by the Kyiv Independent judged that the deal is unlikely to move prices in any real way, but that the symbolism matters.
Zelensky said the money would fuel the war against Ukraine: "This is additional money, additional money for this war against us, without question." In an interview with Axios he called the arrangement "not fair and not honest", and on X he wrote that gifts to putin will not bring peace. He also said the Ukrainian team had not been told of the decision, and called it "a weak decision by strong partners". At the same time he offered reciprocity: Ukraine would stop hitting russian refineries if moscow stops attacking Ukrainian energy.

The same day a meeting took place in Miami with US special envoy Steve Witkoff, the Ukrainian delegation (Kyrylo Budanov, Rustem Umerov, Serhiy Kyslytsia, Davyd Arakhamia) and representatives of the EU, the E3 and NATO. Witkoff called the talks "constructive", but no concrete agreements were announced. Topics included winter preparations, protecting energy, security guarantees and reconstruction. According to the Kyiv Independent, russia is asking for sanctions relief in exchange for an energy truce, while Kyiv insists the pause must be mutual.

NGO Volunteers Support Ukraine keeps helping people affected by the war in whatever way its resources allow.
