Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Kyiv overnight into August 1, killing 9 people and wounding dozens, including four children, across five districts of the capital.
Overnight into August 1, Russia carried out one of its largest strikes on Kyiv in recent memory: according to Ukraine's Air Force, 35 missiles — 27 of them ballistic — and 185 attack drones of various types were launched at Ukraine. The capital bore the brunt of the assault, with Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions also hit. At least nine people were killed in Kyiv and 27 to 30 more were wounded, including four children.
Fires and destruction were recorded in five districts of Kyiv at once. The Darnytskyi district was hit hardest, with seven people killed and 14 more wounded, including two children. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a residential building was partially destroyed — its first and second floors collapsed, trapping people inside. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 17 wounded people were hospitalized. The building housing Lithuania's embassy in Kyiv was also damaged, and five ambulances were burned out with around twenty more damaged.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said air defenses managed to intercept only one of the ballistic missiles fired that night, citing a shortage of interceptors for Patriot systems. It was the second major strike on Ukraine in under 48 hours, and it starkly illustrates how critical the shortage of air defense assets has become for protecting civilians.
