Trump announces an «energy ceasefire»; Kyiv says it has no details

Donald Trump announced an «immediate» energy ceasefire between Ukraine and russia, but Kyiv says it has no information about it. Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to accept it.

On 11 October, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that an «energy ceasefire» was in effect «immediately» in the war between Ukraine and russia, and that «both parties have agreed». Kyiv had no such information: a senior Ukrainian official said nothing was known about any agreement and doubted that moscow had been informed.

Kyiv's reaction

In an Axios interview, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Trump to say when the ceasefire begins: «We are ready, and we will accept it.» He discussed the proposal with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and is waiting for details from the American side. According to Zelensky, the Ukrainian army has received the relevant orders. Volunteers Support Ukraine keeps helping people affected by the war in whatever way its available resources allow.

The strikes continued

Shortly after the announcement, Kharkiv's power plant was hit, the Presidential Office confirmed. Explosions were also heard in Kyiv during the day, where attacks on energy infrastructure continued. Zelensky briefed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on these strikes.

Skepticism and conditions

A lawmaker from russia, Igor Ananskikh, suggested that Trump makes such statements to keep oil prices from rising. Zelensky has stressed that Ukraine will stop attacking the aggressor's oil facilities only as part of a mutual energy ceasefire. This is not the first ceasefire Trump has announced without a concrete agreement behind it.
