On the evening of August 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a significant expansion of the localized production of Western weapons systems on Ukrainian soil. The statement followed a briefing from Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa. At the same time, according to the president, documents are being finalized to deepen direct cooperation between Ukrainian manufacturers and American companies.
Zelensky said Ukraine will expand domestic manufacturing of several types of Western weaponry that had previously been supplied mostly as finished imports. Pavlo Palisa will coordinate the work between Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, US counterparts, and Ukrainian manufacturers, including on "special options" for missile-system use. Volunteers Support Ukraine follows this kind of decision closely, since building up the country's own defense industry is one of the factors that will determine how resilient Ukraine remains over the long run.
The announcement follows Zelensky's July 28 meeting with the leadership of Lockheed Martin in the United States, where the two sides discussed joint production and technology transfer. Lockheed Martin manufactures the ATACMS and HIMARS missile systems, the Patriot air-defense system, and the F-16 fighter jet — all of which have remained critical to Ukraine's defense forces for years.
Moving part of the production of Western systems onto Ukrainian territory means shorter supply chains and faster repairs closer to the front line, without replacing finished deliveries from partners altogether. It concerns systems of the same class shown below — HIMARS-type rocket artillery, which Ukraine has received from Western partners throughout the war.
